What To Expect At The Upcoming Bluey's Experience With Warren Keelan & Russell Ord

Posted on September 05 2018

Vagabond Photographic Creative Guides, Russell Ord and Warren Keelan have partnered together to provide you with an ocean experience like no other. Set in the Majestic Mid-North Coast of NSW. These award-winning photographers will be sharing their extensive knowledge with you over 2.5 days.
What was it about Blueys and the NSW Coast that drew you to offer the workshop in this location?

Warren:
This is an amazing stretch of coast which boasts some beautiful beaches and breaks; ideal for any type of ocean or surf photography. Blueys is a great location which is accessible and offers accommodation and facilities which are perfect for this experience.

Russell:
When the suggestion came through for the NSW coast, I was excited to be involved; I love that part of Australia especially the coastline and weather conditions. It's always nice to travel away from home and experience other parts of Oz.

You both have very unique styles how would you describe them?

Warren:
Russ has been raising the bar from the day he picked up a camera. I've always admired his commitment to his incredible work and I'm excited to be able to blend our styles to create a unique experience through these new Vagabond workshops. My work focuses more on empty ocean forms and abstract interpretations, but ultimately we are both passionate about capturing the relationship between water and light while telling a story. By combining our experiences and techniques I hope to make these events something really different - I know I'll be learning myself from Russ and everyone else there.

Russell:
I am excited to spend time shooting with Warren; his ocean photography is terrific, it will be great to learn from one of the best and incorporate some of his technics into my workflow. My work revolves a lot around the surfers, and I like to find those different water angles and perspectives that give you the feeling of surfing.

What will happen during the workshop?

Warren:
Personally, I think the best way to help other photographers is to listen to what they are passionate about and what they want to achieve from photography and use that information to create a platform where everyone comes away with something different or new to them. Whether it be an idea, perspective or new technique they've not tried which could improve on what they already know, or even just help spark a new creative direction. These opportunities weren't available when I first began creating images of and in the ocean so I'm stoked to be able to work with one of the world's best to share what we've learnt with other artists.

Russell:
In past workshops I have hosted everyone that comes along has different goals, I like to be flexible and adapt to others and help them take their photography to another level this can be a photographic technique to the business side of photography. In the end, it's all about having fun and working together in a happy diverse group which in turn produces incredible results.

What Photography genres will the workshop cover?

Warren:
Russell has a very unique but diverse skill set which will make this workshop one worth experiencing. On one hand he's recognised for his incredible wave and surf imagery, but on the other, his lifestyle photography is just as impressive. Both genres will be featured over the Vagabond workshops and I'll be adding to these with my own interpretations of the ocean using different lenses and techniques.

Russell:
Warren is a master of showcasing the ocean, I am in awe of how he portrays the sea and all its characteristics, I will incorporate lifestyle and surf photography and no doubt together we will touch on other aspects surrounding the work we both do.

What makes this photography workshop different?

Warren:
Two ocean photographers with different backgrounds and experience joining up to share what we've learnt and use in our own workflows will bring great value to these events. My approach to ocean photography comes in the form of artistic impression with a vision to create printed works for my gallery collections and clients. I'll openly share the joys of making art and turning ideas and thoughts into prints, how I view and capture the ocean's moods, inhabitants and anomalies, right through to the realities of earning a living from this specific genre of photography and the time and sacrifice required to make it all work (from my perspective, anyway!).

Russell:
I like to incorporate "real work" into my workshops, meaning its an actual working job that I do for brands and how I work with athletes. I see and have been to many workshops and to me while some may be speaking from experience they are more like " this is how you do this and that" I would rather see those actions and words of wisdom put into real-time practice, hence why we like to call it an experience.

What do attendees have to look forward to when joining this experience?

Warren:
A couple of hard working, open and honest blokes who want to give others the opportunity to make the most from their own photography. I personally enjoy sharing what I have learnt over the years with others. Better still, having the opportunity to stand or swim beside other photographers in the ocean and see what they create with some of the experiences or techniques I have shared is a real privilege. There's nothing more rewarding than watching someone create a picture they are really proud of, or assisting in some way to improve someone's skills and further enjoy the art of image making.

Russell:
I hope that everyone comes along to improve a range of skills and enjoy the whole process, from past experiences it's fantastic to see what people cherish the most from the workshops. On one of our past experiences, we had a participant take an image he had been trying for many years and a few technical tips to do with his housing, and he created that magical shot the very next swim, those moments for me are so rewarding to see just how happy he was.

Tell us about Vagabond Photographic and where you see it in the future

Warren:
Vagabond is a collective of creative minds who have the same vision - to share experiences, skills and knowledge with others interested in photography. It's the idea of giving back and parting these useful tools in order to better the experiences of others passionate about the ocean, the environment and visual documenting/image making. In a world consumed by self and take it's great to have a platform like Vagabond that can encourage and create opportunities for a new generation of photographers and artists. I look forward to this and many more Vagabond future events.

Russell:
Vagabond Photographic is a community built around travel & adventure for those who are passionate about photography, videography & the environment. Having such a like-minded community to share experiences with, working on projects of purpose all while helping each other out would be a significant win in my eyes.

Education is always money well spent. Investing in developing your photography skills is an essential part of developing your style and improving your technique. We look forward to seeing you join us in November.
