Tell us a little about yourself and how you got into photography?
Hey there my name is martin Pippen I’m a carpenter by trade I’m originally from The eastern beaches of Sydney. My first camera I bought for a working holiday trip to Canada and didn’t really have the passion for photography then as I do now. I think that flame sparked when I experienced the Canadian Rockies and Canadian wilderness for the first time how wild and untamed that place was and still is.

What excites you about getting out there escaping & creating?
The great escape for me getting away and creating something for a memory for a moment that otherwise would have happened but would have gone unseen by anyone. This drives my passion for photography. What gets me excited about creating something new is the unknown of what you might capture. For me knowing a place and getting to know somewhere by spending time over and over and knowing what conditions might be the best to create a shot that will be different to something you don’t see each day.

What fascinates you about the ocean?
The Ocean is the driving force of many things and my passion for the ocean comes from I think the early mornings when my mum used to take me down as a kid even before I had woken up to watch the sun rise over the ocean. Something about watching the sun rise that feeling of warmth of a new day and watching a sunrise that will never be the same ever again is special to me. The ever changing conditions from the ocean being flat and calm like a lake then being at the mercy of huge swell, wind and otherwise unfavourable conditions the next. This is what draws me back time and time again.

We had the pleasure of your company at our first Vagabond Escape & Create Gathering… What were your thoughts and how did you find the concept?
For me as a participant on a vagabond weekend it was really relaxed and a great way to meet others who are passionate about the same thing. A weekend with like minded individuals who are all super keen photographers was just the thing to help me find a few extra friends who are just as stoked on photography as I am. A weekend away from social media in a nice quiet campsite by the beach was something that helped me reset a little as regular work can become very repetitive. So to have a weekend on the south coast away from my regular local beaches was great. For me not being from the area it was sweet to head down for the weekend to check out some new beaches to see and feel something fresh. All in all the idea from which these vagabond workshops sprouted is up there with the best. Which by the way didn’t really feel like a workshop it felt more of like a bunch of mates hanging out taking photos together. It was just a fun chilled weekend with no real timetable apart from trying to catch the sunrise/sunset I’d recommend it to anyone who is a keen photographer.

If there was one destination you could travel to and photograph where would it be?
Gee this was a tough question I think traveling to the one destination of my choosing would have to be Cocos keeling Islands that place has been on my list ever since seeing a couple of pages write up in a magazine about it. Crazy crystal clear water, a little tropical island getaway, amazing sea life what more could you ask for really. Maybe some waves to shoot?

Where can we follow your work? (Website / Social)
Most of my shots are on Instagram my handle is Martypipsclicks a little bit non serious my handle name I guess. I also upload to 500px and my handle there is Martin Pippen. You can upload landscape shots there without the insta crop so it’s super handy for the full complete images.
